CHINO HILLS, CA and HOUSTON, TX, October 24, 2011 – HOYA Surgical Optics and Tracey Technologies, Inc. announced the introduction of a new system for cataract surgeons that incorporates the latest version of the proven HOYA iSert® aspheric hydrophobic IOL together with the most advanced iTrace™ system ever developed, the HOYA iTrace™ Surgical Workstation. The system was unveiled to surgeons at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting this weekend in Orlando, FL.

“We are very pleased to launch this fully integrated system of advanced diagnostics and IOL. Finally, cataract surgeons have a surgical planning tool that integrates ALL of the information needed in one test, coupled with the most advanced preloaded IOL available in the U.S.,” said Jake Vander Zanden, President, Americas for HOYA Surgical Optics.

The pre-‐loaded iSert® IOL inserter provides ultimate sterility and control. The HOYA iSert 231 is a hydrophobic IOL with renowned HOYA optics, pre-loaded in the most advanced small-incision insertion system available. It requires only a true 2.4 mm incision and, as a single-use device, iSert reduces the risk of infection in the surgical environment. The Aspheric Balanced Curve technology (ABC design) compensates for decentration and reduces spherical aberration. “Tracey Technologies is pleased to work with HOYA to co-develop the newest generation of iTrace, and producing this full-featured device as a complement to HOYA’s outstanding tools for the cataract surgeon” said Joe Wakil, M.D., CEO of Tracey Technologies. Originally developed as part of missile defense systems, ray-tracing is an incredible technology that has been further advanced through the cooperative R&D efforts of HOYA and Tracey Technologies. The HOYA iTrace Surgical Workstation is the only complete diagnostic device based on advanced ray tracing technology that isolates and quantifies corneal versus lens aberrations. The precise pre-operative metrics that it provides allow surgeons to more accurately predict post-surgery outcomes and select the best IOL for each patient. Dr. David F. Chang, a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco commented, “For a premium refractive IOL practice, this is invaluable technology. The HOYA iTrace Surgical Workstation provides me with all the important preoperative optical information that I need to make an IOL recommendation for the patient. With iTrace, I can immediately rule out some multifocal candidate’s IOL options because of corneal aberrations that would increase the risk of 20/unhappy.”

The 5-in-1 System (Corneal Topographer, Auto-refractor, Wavefront Analyzer, Pupillometer, and Keratometer) also dramatically streamlines patient workups and improves overall office efficiency. Used in combination, these tools provide a patient-centric approach to visual restoration that combines leading technologies and services to deliver the best outcomes for the patient and the practice.

SINGAPORE, March 1, 2011 – HOYA Surgical Optics announced record results for their business in 2010 and a global optimization plan for 2011. The 2010 business results were achieved based on growth of their intraocular lens business in all sales regions: Japan, Asia/Pacific, the Americas, and EMEA. The new globalization plan that begins this month will result in a realignment of functions and departments and a move of the company’s headquarters to Singapore.

In describing the strong business results, Thomas A. Dunlap, President and CEO of HOYA Surgical Optics, said: “We are very pleased with the strong performance of our business in all regions of the world. We have been a leading IOL manufacturer for many years but are still a newcomer to many markets around the world. Our performance this past year demonstrates ophthalmologists’ increasing appreciation for the quality of our IOLs and the confidence they have in achieving exceptional patient outcomes with our lenses. Our year over year revenue growth translates to HOYA being the fastest growing IOL company,” Dunlap added.

Commenting on the Global Optimization plan and headquarter relocation, Mr. Dunlap said: “This plan represents our on-going effort to fully leverage our strengths and operate more consistently as one global organization both internally and externally. We have had a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Singapore since 2003 and the integration of key functions at this location will enhance our operational efficiency and bring us closer to customers in important emerging markets.” Mr. Dunlap confirmed that HOYA Surgical Optics will maintain its current offices in the U.S., Japan, and Germany in order to optimize interaction with customers on a local level. “As our business has grown and become more globally integrated, the advantages of operating more uniformly out of a single location became a more obvious competitive advantage,” said Mr. Dunlap.

The iSert™ Preloaded IOL Injection System provides predictable and safe insertion of glistening-free hydrophobic acrylic aspheric IOLs through a sub 2.4 mm incision.

The iSert™ Preloaded IOL Injection System provides predictable and safe insertion of glistening-free hydrophobic acrylic aspheric IOLs through a sub 2.4 mm incision.

CHINO HILLS, CALIF., August 13, 2009—Hoya Surgical Optics, Inc., announced today the United States introduction of the iSert™ Preloaded Intraocular Lens (IOL) Injection System. The iSert’s™ revolutionary technology provides unparalleled predictability and safety for intraocular lens insertion. With the IOL already loaded and ready for insertion, the system eliminates the potential for lens damage due to misloading and risk of contamination from endotoxins associated with reusable instruments.

“Frequently, there is a lot of pressure to load lenses quickly without errors during ophthalmic surgery,” says Joseph Russell, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Hoya Surgical Optics. “With iSert™, the lens arrives already loaded into the inserter, eliminating lens handling prior to implantation. The iSert™ can be readied for the surgeon in about 15 seconds, even in the dim light of the O.R. This simple preparation ensures predictability and eliminates risk associated with damaged lenses or contamination. iSert™ can dramatically improve patient safety and efficiency in the O.R., while allowing the staff to concentrate on the most important part of the surgery—the patient—and not the IOL and inserter.”

The iSert™ Preloaded System is a proven technology. In use in Europe and Japan since 2007, the iSert™ Preloaded System’s completely closed system—from manufacturing facility to implantation in the eye—delivers a lens that is untouched by human hands for the ultimate in safety and sterility. The single-use inserter eliminates the risk of contamination from endotoxins associated with reusable materials and weaknesses of flash sterilization that can result in toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS).

In addition, doctors can utilize the glistening-free, hydrophobic acrylic aspheric Hoya Surgical Optics lenses introduced earlier this year with the advanced technology of the iSert™ Preloaded IOL System. The iSert™ bevel tip is designed to accommodate surgeons who prefer incisions smaller than 2.4- mm.

“As the first IOL manufacturer to provide a preloaded lens insertion system into the United States, we are excited about creating a major paradigm shift in cataract surgery,” says Tom Dunlap, president and CEO. “The team at Hoya Surgical Optics will continue to provide surgeons with the most advanced ophthalmic technologies that allow them to deliver safer, better vision results for patients.”

Hoya Surgical Optics, Inc. Plans to Begin USA Distribution in late 2008

CHINO HILLS, CALIF. – Hoya Surgical Optics, Inc, (HSO) a subsidiary of Hoya Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) announced today it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to begin marketing of the iSpheric™ Model YA- 60BB Intraocular Lens in the United States.

The iSpheric™ Model YA-60BB Intraocular Lens is a foldable hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens with blue PMMA haptics and a blue-light absorbing yellow optic that absorbs almost all potentially harmful ultraviolet light. The lens can be implanted using an inserter through an un-enlarged phaco incision. In early 2009, HSO plans to introduce a new version of the lens packaged in a sterile, disposable, pre-loaded plastic injector. The iSert™ pre-loaded injector is designed to virtually reduce lens handling time in the operating room and eliminate loading errors that can lead to damaged lenses commonly associated with other foldable IOLs.

HSO expects to begin shipping the current iSpheric™ Intraocular Lenses to surgical facilities throughout the United States later this year.

The iSpheric™ Model YA-60BB Intraocular Lens was evaluated in over 600 clinical study subjects in the FDA clinical trial. Visual acuity results were excellent with over 98% of subjects reporting 20/40 or better Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) beginning at one month postoperative and maintaining that through the study’s main endpoint, 12 months postoperative. These rates for BCVA exceeded the FDA “Grid” with no lens-related adverse events or significant postoperative complications.
“The iSpheric™ lens has been widely available and well accepted for several years in Japan and Europe,” noted the Medical Monitor for the FDA study, Penny A. Asbell, MD, Professor of Ophthalmology, Director of Cornea and Refractive Services; Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, New York, USA, “so the U.S. results are not surprising. The lens is well tolerated and the data from the color-vision sub-study that was part of the FDA trials showed that patients reported no color vision disturbances due to the yellow optic. So, they get additional UV protection without any visual tradeoff.”

“We will begin selling the iSpheric lenses later this year,” reported Yasuro Mori, President of Hoya Surgical Optics, Inc. He added, “We are excited about the upcoming AAO meeting in Atlanta, GA where we can start to introduce ourselves to U.S. surgeons as well as industry professionals interested in working with us as we rapidly build our ophthalmic product portfolio.”
